“Heatwave” is inspired by the long, sun-soaked days of my childhood: growing up on the beach, eating fruit straight from the trees, and basking in the salt water and summer heat. As a Kaanju, Kuku Ya’u and Girramay woman, these memories are deeply tied to my connection with Country: the warmth of the sand underfoot, the sweetness of hand-picked fruits, the cool relief of the ocean. Through soft pastel tones and layered symbols, this piece captures the stillness, joy and richness of those days, honouring both the land that raised me and the stories it holds.
