This artwork represents many days spent with my mob down by the beach, sitting by a fire. I can still smell the smoke and I remember how I’d look up and watch the smoke swirl in circles above me in the night sky. The smoke was also great for keeping mosquitoes away.
Sometimes we’d put the fish or crab we’d just caught in a pot and cook it over the fire while my mum, aunties and older sisters would crack open the oysters they’d just picked. My brothers would spend hours looking for sticks to burn and sometimes they’d let me come along with them. This was part of life in the bush.
